Rounding is a way to make a number simpler. We do this by making the number closer to a specific value, like 10, 100, or 1000.

Here's how it works:

  1. Decide what place value you want to round to. For example, you might want to round to the nearest ten or the nearest hundred.

  2. Look at the digit to the right of the place value you're rounding to.

  3. If the digit is 5 or greater, round up. This means you add 1 to the digit you're rounding to.

  4. If the digit is less than 5, round down. This means you leave the digit you're rounding to the same.

Here's an example:

Let's say we want to round the number 37 to the nearest ten.

  1. The digit we're rounding to is 3 (the tens place).

  2. The digit to the right of 3 is 7.

  3. Since 7 is greater than 5, we round up.

So, 37 rounded to the nearest ten is 40.

Here's another example:

Let's say we want to round the number 823 to the nearest hundred.

  1. The digit we're rounding to is 8 (the hundreds place).

  2. The digit to the right of 8 is 2.

  3. Since 2 is less than 5, we round down.

So, 823 rounded to the nearest hundred is 800.

Here are some tips for rounding numbers:

  • Practice makes perfect! The more you practice, the better you'll get at rounding numbers.

  • Use a number line to help you visualize rounding.

  • Remember the rule: 5 or more, round up; 4 or less, round down.
