What is a Number System?

A number system is like a set of rules for writing and using numbers. It's similar to how you have rules in a game that everyone follows so everyone can understand each other.

The Most Common Number System: Decimal System (Base 10)

The number system we use every day is called the "decimal" or "base 10" system. It's called base 10 because we use 10 different digits to make all our numbers:

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Think of these digits like building blocks. Just like you can build amazing things with LEGO blocks, we can create huge numbers by combining these 10 digits!

How Numbers Work

Let's break down how we create numbers:

• When we run out of single digits, we add another digit

• Each position represents a different value

• As we move left, the value gets 10 times bigger!

Example: Let's Look at the Number 542

• 2 is in the "ones" place

• 4 is in the "tens" place

• 5 is in the "hundreds" place

So 542 means:

• 5 hundreds (5 × 100 = 500)

• 4 tens (4 × 10 = 40)

• 2 ones (2 × 1 = 2)

Add them together: 500 + 40 + 2 = 542!
